Celebrate Fo Guang Shan 55th Anniversary

On May 16, the Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and Detroit Children English Dharma Class especially designed a series of virtual activities for students to celebrate Fo Guang Shan 55th Anniversary.

The class kicked off with the “Life of Venerable Master Hsing Yun” video. Through beautiful motion pictures not only attracted their attention but also learned about the compassion and resolve of Venerable Master Hsing Yun in promoting Humanistic Buddhism and his remarkable perseverance turned a wasted mountain into sacred shrines.

Teachers also designed an activity sheet with verses from Master Hsing Yun’s Humble Table, Wise Fare. After explaining the inspiration behind Master Hsing Yun’s words of wisdom, the students were given time to practice transcribing the wise words to experience the cultivation of transcribing sutra.

After the cultivation session, teachers took the children on a virtual tour of FGS Headquarters revolved around the objectives of cultivation, culture, education, and charity. Students engaged in this virtual tour by connecting magnificent structures to the objectives of FGS.

The final portion of the class was dedicated to celebrating Buddha’s Birthday. Teachers presented different festive traditions of Buddhists around Asia in commemorating Buddha, which included the Festival of Bathing the Buddha. Moreover, teachers also posed an interesting question to the class: “Does Buddha need us to bathe him?” This interaction allowed the children to learn that bathing the Buddha is meant to purify our minds from all defilements.
