New Year’s Day Celebration and Recitation Contest – Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Chinese School

As the year 2020 comes to the end, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Chinese School hosted the “New Year’s Day Celebration and Recitation Contest”. The virtual event was held during the last class of this year on December 13, 2020. All the students welcomed the upcoming year through their resounding and heartwarming performances.


Due to COVID-19, 2020 has been an uneasy year for most of us. The Chinese School especially organized this festivity. Teachers and students have been preparing for this contest for over a month. The junior classes added choreography to their performances, bringing us more lively presentations. The senior classes integrated their own inspirations for the new year with contemporary poems by Haizi and the prayers written by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, creating unique pieces of literature.


The event started with the harmonious Song of Fo Guang Shan and the cheerful I love Happiness animation. Hosts Libo and Kelly invited Venerable Chueh Fan, the Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and Venerable Ru Xing, the advising venerable for the Chinese school to give a speech. The Venerables remarked that Buddhism has profound influence on the Chinese language and culture. The rhythm and the imagination of the poetry represent its essence. The Venerables also praised the students for keeping up with their Chinese learning by enrolling online.
