Responding to Community Needs – 2020 Mississauga Thanksgiving Food Drive

Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto and the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Toronto Chapter responded to Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie's call for the "2020 Thanksgiving Food Drive" to support the Mississauga Food Bank, upholding Fo Guang Shan's principle to "benefit society through charitable programs". On October 1, a food donation box was installed at the front door of Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto to encourage BLIA members and community members to donate food, so that neighbours in need of assistance could have a plentiful Thanksgiving.

Mabel Lam, President of BLIA Toronto Chapter, expressed her gratitude to BLIA members and the 6th Meadowvale Scout Group for their warm response in following the Food Bank’s “One Bag Challenge” concept. Supermarket shopping bags were used as donor units, each containing various canned vegetarian food, pastas, cereals, oatmeal, rice, noodles, baby food, fruit juice and other foods. According to the data from the Food Bank, by October 22 the BLIA Toronto Chapter had donated more than 800 pounds of food and CAD $6,720.

Mabel also thanked the BLIA committees and the leaders of 6th Meadowvale Scout Group. Every afternoon for three weeks they took turns volunteering at Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto, notifying the Mississauga Food Bank to pick up donations whenever the food donation box was 80% full in order to keep the food fresh.
