To help students have a better understanding of Chinese New Year, Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto Chinese School prepared various celebration activities online, which not only brings the traditional culture to the students but also promotes a healthier lifestyle to them.

First, students of each class watched videos related to Chinese New Year traditions, and then teachers explained the vocabularies such as Wrapping Dumplings, Pasting Spring Couplets, Setting Off Firecrackers, Watching Dragon-Lion Dances and Giving Red Envelopes, etc. There are a number of handcraft activities involved as well. Students proudly presented their final works at the end of the classes.

Due to the pandemic, students have been staying at home for almost a year. To make them feel more relaxed and get more physical exercises, teachers especially arranged virtual sports sessions including playing the Bean Bag Toss Game and practicing Kung Fu moves.

Finally, teachers encouraged every students by reading Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s “A Prayer to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva for Safety from the Coronavirus Outbreak”. In the article, it is said that no matter how difficult the situation, when there is compassion and wisdom, when we all practice the Three Acts of Goodness: Do good deeds, speak good words and think good thoughts and when we all protect the environment and have respect for all lives, we shall be able to turn peril into safety. Hope the pandemic will end soon and wish everyone an Auspicious New Year!
